My father was a keen amateur photographer was created by soumitss
Hello everyone. My father was a keen amateur photographer, he passed away last year and left thousands of slides and prints. My mother's 75th birthday is coming in spring, and I'd love to turn a few of his best photos into something she can touch and use every day, not just another photo album. My sister sews, so we could make something together. Has anyone seen projects where family photographs were turned into textiles? I'm looking for ideas and practical tips on how it was done.

What a lovely idea, and very doable. There's a blog called Aluminum Loaf with a whole run of
handmade quilts and fabric projects
that does exactly this. The author had her mother's photographs printed on fabric through Spoonflower at the largest size that didn't distort the image, roughly 27 by 40 inches, and then quilted over them. One is a fuchsia flower, another is air bubbles trapped in a frozen pond, and seeing the stitching follow the picture gives you a good sense of what works. Practical tip from those posts: pick images with strong shapes and contrast, fine detail gets lost in the quilting. Order a small test print first to check colours. Your sister will know what to do from there. Have you chosen the photos yet?
