What OS version are you using ? 32 bit or 64 bit ??

+1 !! 3.5Gb is a limitation for 32bits OSes.
More than that, under 32bit, max can't use more than 2GB for itself.
To remove this limit and authorise max to use 3GB ram, you need to use the /3GB switch into your boot.ini.
