well you're right SR changes the max gamma to 1.0 at render time, then switch back to 2.2 when working in viewports.
note : you can setup SR as you like about VFB :
Start a new scene
Launch SR
go into options panel
change VFB as you want into the option panel (max or vfb)
Change any setting you would like at SR startup.
When done, go into the init/save panel then click on "apply actual settings as SR defaults"
Next time you'll launch SR on fresh scene, it'll start with the VFB you like, method you like, etc...

I can do all the things you suggest, however it does not resolve the one thing I wish I could get working from SR... "network rendering through back-burner". I do not have problems with distributed rendering. The reason I want to use SR for network rendering through back-burner is for the LC setting you have built in. This save a lot of time for me. every time I render to back-burner with the LC setting checked in SR, The render farm times out on the rendering giving me errors. I have tried setting the SR Gamma to 1 thinking this might be the cause however it was not. It seems something with how SR is communicating with back-burner is causing it to crash. Also, I have the latest back burner for 2012.
Any suggestions?
