Anyone else feel completely lost the first time they searched for concrete block

I want to share what I went through last month because I genuinely had no idea how confusing this would be when I started looking. We needed blocks for a small retaining wall in the backyard, nothing huge, and I figured I would just find the cheapest listing and order it. That was my first mistake.I called three different suppliers and got three completely different prices for what looked like the same exact block in the photos. One guy quoted almost double what another supplier did and when I asked why, he actually took the time to explain that his blocks were rated for structural use while the cheaper option I found was meant for decorative garden edging only. I had no idea there was even a difference until that phone call. That conversation honestly saved me from making a pretty expensive mistake. If I had just gone with the cheap option my wall probably would have started failing within a year or two because it was never designed to hold back actual soil pressure.

What I wish someone had told me before I started
Pick up the block if you can before buying it. I know that sounds basic but the weight tells you a lot. The decorative ones felt noticeably lighter in my hand compared to the structural grade samples, and once you feel that difference once you never forget it.Also ask about delivery before you get excited about the unit price. My neighbor went through this same process around the same time and his delivery fee ended up being almost a third of his total order cost because he lives further from the supplier's yard than I do. Get the full quote with delivery included before comparing anything.I also learned the hard way that you should not just order blocks and let them sit outside for weeks before your project actually starts. I had mine delivered too early and a rainy week left some of them sitting in standing water on the ground. Nothing catastrophic happened but I read afterward that this can mess with how evenly they cure and settle once you actually use them.

Where I ended up doing more research
After that confusing first round of calls I started looking at sites that actually explain the different grades and specs so I would know what questions to ask before talking to suppliers again. I found detachment5block.com  useful for getting a baseline understanding before I went back out shopping a second time, since it helped me figure out what I actually needed instead of just guessing based on price.

What I would tell anyone starting this process
Figure out what your project actually needs structurally before you even look at prices. Ask suppliers directly about strength ratings instead of assuming. And get everything delivered cost included before you compare options, because the sticker price alone tells you almost nothing useful.Honestly the whole process took longer than I expected just because of how much I had to learn along the way, but the wall turned out solid and I am glad I did not just grab the cheapest option from that first search.
