I have tried to upload images but it is not working
One is rendered in the default method and it renders out with strange rings of bright colors and crazy shapes all over it.
The second one is the same shape rendered with the LC/LC ambient occlusion method, it turns out OK, why is that?
They are standard materials, I have tried V-Ray materials as well.
If I render with default settings in V-Ray it looks OK but it is slow.
What is happening I can only assume its something to do with IR

If it's IrrMap related, you can try to uncheck in options panel the interp glossies and interp lights options.
