difference betwen .75 and .85 was created by jinj
hi,
the plug in is very nice, I'm testing it to decide to buy.
well know I have a few questions.
I try .75 and .85 all demos version the first one on max 2009 sp2 the second one on 2010 sp4.
I try to render classroom using low quality and interior preset.
the .85b it's slower than .75.... but it's more detailed... IM have to do 5 passes in .85.... why this difference?
there is a preset that include IM and brute force?
why can't I use a light cache map?
another thing. control threshold was implemented from sp2 to sp3/sp4
the value of 0,005 for sp2 correspond to 0,01 in sp3/sp4... this mean lower time at the same quality. but for the setting explained up I find a value of 0,006... I think that is an incorrect setting.
I reed on you forum about an in-development version for mentalRay.
what do you can say about it?
thx

Hi and thanks for your interest in SolidRocks.
0.85b is a little bit slower than 0.75, you're right, but it gives FAR better and robust results...
Engine is almost the same, but factory presets have been adjusted with the help of powerusers and beta testers.
The difference comes, too, from the different init settings between the 2 builds.
Of course all is customizable to match your needs.
Basically interior settings makes 4 passes in 640*480. The number of passes depends of the resolution, as SolidRocks automatically changes settings according to the new res (irrmap min and max, detail radius, LC subdivs, AA values, etc..)
Of course you can make your own preset using the preset editor (locked in demo builds)
for more info see here : solidrocks.subburb.com/index.php?option=...cle&id=40&Itemid=112
the value of 0,005 for sp2 correspond to 0,01 in sp3/sp4.
On the paper, that's right. But the factory presets have been setted with sp3 and sp4. The 0.006 value is here to improve Irrmap more than grain removal.
Again, you can adjust these values according to your needs by making or diting a preset.
For instance, IM + Brute force is not implmented, neither the photon map, because they are not so much requested by users. I want to keep the GUI as simple as possible, so i've not implemented these methods right now. but it can be done.
About mental ray :
My first goal is to finish the 1.0 dev for Vray. I'm actually working on it, adding some new features (animation tools) and polishing other ones.
After that i'll try to make a mental ray version.
I'm asked, too, for a XSI/maya version...
Hope it helps,
Best regards,

oh thank's!!!
irradiance map and brute force is a very good and precise solution for rendering with fisical sky and day light systems. what about use to use a vrlmap... there is a trik... a work around... because you say
" Again, you can adjust these values according to your needs by making or diting a preset."
but when I select vrlmap from file and then I hit render.... the vrlmap automatically reset and a new one will create.
thank's
and please consider that a version for mental ray is a great opportunity for you and all max user,
any max user have it's free mental Ray version. most of the user prefer to use vray because the setting up is more easier.
