first, some users are using it on XP64 + MAX9 64 + RC.
I haven't tested it on Vista64. can you have a try with the demo, and tell me how if runs ?

concerning SR behavior :

when you launch it, SR performs first a series of initial adjustments of Vray engine.
adjust the number of threads to system threads.
it affects all parts except caustics, frame buffer, camera, enviro, colormapping and default displace.

then, while using, changing quality and/or size affects :
- max Refl/refr bounces, LC, Imap, rqmc, Aqmc values/settings.

if you close SR, nothing changes, and you can make personnal adjustements.
While SR is running, personnal adjustments can be made, but only on values SR don't handle (animation settings, Color mapping, Vray VFB, and so on.)

i really don't know if i'm allowed to talk about Vray core deeply in public forum.
But, if you're interested, i can send you a mail with a detailed description of parameters changed by SR.
