Hi
We are working on a semi complicated animation with loads of moving objects. What's the ideal way to handle this these days? I've tried with the 2 pass build in in solidrocks, but get some bad flickering now and then. If I use the 1 pass version from SR, should I use some specific settings elsewhere in SR, like the bruteforce preset or something else?

Hello !
I sugest bruteforce/Lightcache for this kind of situation.
The lightcache should have the retrace option activated (into SR options)
Latests versions of vray even have a flicker reduction option in lightcache..
But, of course, in BruteForce/LC, renders will be much mong longer to render...
if using IRrmap/LC you should at least use the DE button (detail enhance) to help Irrmap to handle little parts.
And, in MOAWiz, activate the use camerapath. (if camera is moving)
Note : if camera moves too much, then avoid using camera path. It's managed to help reduce flickering when camera moves, but not much.
Depends on your project, but a good way i often use is :
(lights are not moving, not usable in this case.)
- hide all animated objects
- render all static objects using irradiance map/Lc with the help of the FlyWiz
- load the result as background (to help later composite alphas)
- select all static parts, and make they vray options "matte shadow" with alpha contribution -1 (you can easily find infos on that stuff)
- unhide your animated parts
- render now the animated parts (with static in matte shadows) using solid method : BruteForce/Lightcache or even greater : BruteForce/Bruteforce. you'll get grain but no flickering at all this way.
- now composite the 2 renderings
Pros :
- Efficient way to save rendertime, using all vray advantages into each situation (moving, static..)
- you can render again your animated parts if needed without to have to re-render static parts.
Cons :
- you'll loos the colors in shadows
- sometimes the compisiting can be quite hard with black fringes.
