Hi, Roysgi !
thanks for your deep testing !
about the minipreview distortion :
i've seen the same behavior yesterday.
It happends when you opens solidrocks and "lock" is ON.
i've corrected that, just download the fresh build (15/02/2009). i've corrected it.
AutoExpo :
in your case, before auto expo your pic was 22% darker than a midgray image.
after autoexpo your pic is only 2% brighter than a pure grey image.
sounds right for me.
note : there is an option for Autoexpo : "Ignore alpha pixels" or "whole image"
This option tells the autoexpo algorithm to consider alpha pixels (i.e background) or not.
have a try to find the best option in your case.
Autowhite balance works just like a camera :
you need to duplicate your camera (instance) and place this second camera to focus a white area. then launch the white balance tool. the white render will be correctly color balanced
go back to your first camera, and make your render.
Hmm.. it seems that when you cancel auto white balance there is an error in SR. i'll make a new build today (16/02/2009) to correct that point.

Thanks for the quick responses.
I'm trying to understand the process of working with Autowhite balance.
Do you mean that the target of the instanced camera, should be focus on the center of the white area-object (by eys balling). And is there a meaning to the distance of the instanced camera from this white area? Thanks again.

you're welcome
Imagine you've a real camera in your hands :
to evaluate white balance, a simple way is to shoot a white paper, or white wall, to "show" the camera what must be considered as white. in SR, there is the same process. you need to shoot something white to evaluate white balance.
i've used the second camera instanced tip to avoid to move your main camera
