SR Keeps Setting My Gamma Back to 2.2 in Color Mapping

HI dudes !
Before adding new stuff, i'll try to remove these bugs. sounds logical.

Cypri, Do you prefer that when asking SR to not manage color mapping (user) it'll immediatly restore the values that were present before the SR launch ?

i 'm working hard to make gamma management simple and efficient.. but not so evident...

for example : imagine that you've a max with already activated gamma correction, for example viewport gamma = 2.2, input 2.2 and output 1.0.

then you launch solidrocks, and check OFF the gamma correction button...
What doaes SR need to do ? fully deactivate max gamma or restore the max gamma values ?

Perhaps i need to add one more button ? (gamma on/off + user) to make the good choice ?

I've another question for you : are you using often minipreview ?

Thanks guys for your active support.

"you launch solidrocks, and check OFF the gamma correction button...

I think Gamma Correction simply IS part of, or IS NOT part of, one's permanent workflow. For me, it is ALWAYS on, never changes. If I click Gamma Correction ON in SR, I would like it leave my gamma settings AS IS, which for me is: gamma 2.2, input 2.2, and output 2.2. IF I set SR to gamma correction OFF, I would want it to simply set my gamma in Max back to default: gamma 1.0, input 1.0, and output 1.0.
I think a USER button would accomplish this, no?

I never really use the mini preview because it never looks anything like my actual render.

oko noticed.
why are you using output 2.2 ?
What is your Vray color mapping gamma value when using your personnal lwf ?

Well, SolidRocks makes complex things in order to manage gamma both at work time (viewport) and render time to permit user to have a full LWF feedback into the material editor (WYSIWYG). So it uses different gamma settings for work time and render time :

when working (viewports), SR applies these values (if gamma correction is on and 2.2):
max gamma 2.2
max input gamma 2.2
affect material edit + affect color selectors = on
Vray color mapping gamma = 2.2

When rendering, SR temporary applies a gamma (max gamma) = 1.0 to avoid double gamma if using max VFB.

There are soo many cases to handle : when user Quit SR, with and without applying SR values, when quitting Sr if gamma is on or off..
Well it's an headhache.. but i'll find a way !

oups i forget :

in my opinion, if you're making renders at gamma 2.2, you HAVE to put 2.2 value into the Vray color mapping gamma value.
This helps Vray to compute correct noise, as it is informed that you're making a 2.2 rendering.

directly copy/pasted from www.spot3d.com official Vray documentation:

Gamma - this parameter allows the user to control the gamma correction for the output image regardless of the color mapping mode. To correct the image for a 2.2-gamma display, you should set the Gamma parameter simply to 2.2.

my off topic 2 cents ;)

"why are you using output 2.2 ?"
I set everything to 2.2 in Gamma Correction. I also set my vray color mapping gamma to 2.2. I then set SR Gamma Correction to "on and to "later". I use the VFB and have the sRGB button pressed.

I find that then saving to 2.2 gamma allows me to open the image in Photoshop with it appearing exactly the same way as in the render. This is exactly what I want and how my settings work.

Hello subburb,

...in the SR0.85 I prefer that SR don´t manged the color mapping... I use different typs of parameters, not only reinhard.
There are many Examples (Tutorial *.max files) for beginners, were the color mapping is set by the owner of the file (for example HSV exponential and other dark/bright mulitplier)... if SR would have the control over the color mapping from the beginning the adjust settings would be lose!

I would prefer that the settings could be restore! The gamma correction should be an opinion and do not overwrite the present settings! Gamma on/of + user is a goog idea, maybe the choose for the type (hsv /exponential/linear) would make the SR-Version better!

The example is right, if you use LWF the gamma is 2,2, input 2,2 and output 1.0, but the Texture must be load in the same gamma input!...but I think it is in the SR Script, is it? There is a PlugIn for the GammaCorrection for Textures:
www.cuneytozdas.com/software/3dsmax/

...I think the LWF is dangerous for beginners, because there are many thinks you can do wrong!

...yes I find the minipriview very useful. I´ve got the VRAY RT, but it don´t show the proxis at last  . The minipriview is fast and shows everythink I need. Maybe a free scale for the preview would be nice, but I can render the image with a small sice this have the same effect!

Dear danb4026

there are many tutorials about the Gamma Correction:

www.gijsdezwart.nl/tutorials.php
www.aversis.be/tutorials/vray/essential_gamma_01.htm
www.cgdigest.com/linear-workflow/
www.creativecrash.com/tutorials/linear-w...dsmax-and-vray/page2
software.asgvis.com/index.php?option=com...tent&task=view&id=24
www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150SP1/render_params_colormapping.htm

and many more!

I hope I could help :P ...and sorry for my bad english!

Go on to make the SR perfect! It is a very nice tool!
